Maitake mushroom aids lung cancer defense
Inhibitory effect of MD-Fraction on tumor metastasis: involvement of NK cell activation and suppression of intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1 expression in lung vascular endothelial cells.
Highly relevant to lung cancer treatment
In exploring the impact of the MD-Fraction extracted from maitake mushrooms on lung cancer metastasis, we conducted experiments using a murine model. Our results showed that administering MD-Fraction just two days before tumor cells were implanted significantly reduced the spread of both colon-26 carcinoma and B16/BL6 melanoma cells to the lungs.

We found that this mushroom extract enhances the production of IL-12 from antigen presenting cells (APCs), which are crucial for triggering immune responses. Treatment with MD-Fraction also activated natural killer (NK) cells, leading to increased tumor cell killing capacity. Notably, when we depleted the NK cells using a specific antibody, the anti-metastatic effects of MD-Fraction disappeared, further confirming the importance of NK cell activity in this process.

Additionally, in our ex vivo tests, we discovered that MD-Fraction inhibited the adhesion of melanoma cells to activated lung vascular endothelial cells. This effect was also mirrored by using an anti-intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1 antibody, suggesting that MD-Fraction operates by suppressing ICAM-1 and thereby reducing the ability of cancer cells to latch onto the blood vessel walls.

Overall, our findings indicate that MD-Fraction from maitake mushrooms shows promise in inhibiting lung cancer metastasis, primarily through immune activation and interference with tumor cell adhesion.

Maitake may aid lung cancer
Can maitake MD-fraction aid cancer patients?
Moderate relevance for lung cancer
We explored the potential benefits of maitake mushrooms, specifically a component known as MD-fraction, in supporting lung cancer patients. Our investigation included a group of patients aged 22 to 57, all in stages II to IV of their cancer journey. We found that a combination of MD-fraction and whole maitake powder led to significant symptom improvement or cancer regression in 62.5% of lung cancer patients.

While this is a promising percentage, it’s worth noting that results varied among different cancer types. For example, improvements were seen in lung cancer, but much less success was reported for leukemia, stomach cancer, and brain cancer patients. Additionally, we observed that those taking maitake alongside chemotherapy showed enhanced immune cell activity, boosting their immune response by 1.2 to 1.4 times compared to those receiving only chemotherapy.

Overall, our findings suggest that while maitake mushroom shows some potential for aiding lung cancer treatment, we cannot draw definitive conclusions about its effectiveness when isolated from other treatments. More research is needed to fully realize its capabilities and role in comprehensive cancer care.

Maitake D-Fraction shows promise
Effect of Maitake (Grifola frondosa) D-Fraction on the activation of NK cells in cancer patients.
Some benefits, not specific to lung cancer
We explored how maitake mushroom extract, known as D-Fraction, can potentially influence lung cancer patients' immune responses. In our focus, we observed the effects of D-Fraction on natural killer (NK) cells, which play a crucial role in fighting cancer.

The study included cancer patients who received maitake D-Fraction without any accompanying anticancer drugs. We monitored NK cell activity and tracked other immune parameters while evaluating any changes in tumor markers. Interestingly, while there were slight changes in immune cell types like CD4(+) and CD8(+) cells, these did not correlate with disease severity.

However, we found that maitake D-Fraction appeared to hinder cancer progression by enhancing NK cell activity and lowering tumor marker levels in all patients examined. This suggests it might hold promise in supporting the immune system's ability to respond to cancer. Therefore, our findings indicate that measuring NK cell activity could be a useful way to monitor disease progression during immunotherapy involving maitake D-Fraction.

Reduces cancer risk
Essential. Since I began taking this supplement a few years ago, I haven’t had colds or flu. This supplement contains 100 mcg of Selenium per dose. Studies have shown that selenium could reduce the risk of lung cancer significantly and overall cancer deaths, which is indeed promising.
